Our Physicians

Our team of physicians works with our medical and support staff to provide patients at the Carolina Center for Behavioral Health with quality, comprehensive care in a supportive therapeutic environment.  

Gergana Dimitrova, M.D. - Medical Director

Dr. Dimitrova has nearly 10 years of experience practicing psychiatric medicine and currently serves as the Medical Director at The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health. She previously worked for the Worcester County Health Department Outpatient Community Psychiatric Clinic where she specialized in the treatment of patients with dual diagnosis issues. Prior to this experience, she earned her MD from the Bulgarian Medical Academy and completed a Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of British Columbia. She has also completed residency training at the University of Maryland Medical School and the Bulgarian Medical Academy.
 

Bryant Byrne, M.D. 

Dr. Byrne holds a BS in Neuroscience from Vanderbilt University and earned her MD from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.  She completed her general psychiatry residency and went on to complete a fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at MUSC as well.  Dr. Byrne is board certified in General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  She works with our adolescent inpatient and adolescent partial hospitalization programs in addition to providing care on the adult inpatient units.   

George Jacob, M.D.

Dr. Jacob holds a BS in Biology from the University of South Carolina and earned his MD from the USC School of Medicine.  He completed his residency at the Los Angeles County University of Southern California Medical Center.  Dr. Jacob is board certified in General Psychiatry.  He works with our adult inpatient and ECT programs.

April Richardson, M.D.

Dr. Richardson holds a BS in Microbiology from the University of Michigan and received her MD from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.  She recently completed a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia.  She has also completed a fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry with the USC School of Medicine.  Dr. Richardson is board certified in General Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  She works with our adult inpatient, adolescent inpatient, and partial hospitalization programs. 

Jon Snipes, M.D.

Dr. Snipes holds a BS in Biology from Clemson University and received his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina.  He completed his residency and was chief resident at MUSC, as well as being the first graduate of the United State's first Fellowship in Brain Stimulation program at MUSC.  He is board certified in General Psychiatry and works with our adult inpatient, ECT, chemical dependency and Suboxone outpatient programs. 

Brian Still, M.D. 

Dr. Still holds a BS in Biology from the University of South Carolina and received his MD from the USC School of Medicine.  He completed his residency at the Medical University of South Carolina and is board certified in Psychiatry.  Before joining The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health, Dr. Still worked at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine.  He works with our adult inpatient programs.

Jason A. Flassing, PA-C 

Jason Flassing, Physician Assistant, holds a Master of Medical Science degree from Emory University, as well as a Post-Baccalaureate in Biology from the University of South Carolina -  Upstate and a BS in Business Administration from Appalachian State University.  Prior to joining The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health, he worked as a Physician Assistant at Craig County Community Health Center in New Castle, Virginia and as a volunteer PA at the Roanoke Rescue Mission in Roanoke, Virginia.  He works with our adult psychiatric patients as well as conducting history and physicals in all of our patient groups.      

Karen Cooper, MSN, FNP-C

Karen Cooper, Family Nurse Practitioner, holds a BS in Nursing from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, and an MS from The University of North Carolina in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Prior to joining The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health, Ms. Cooper worked as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Greenville Hospital System, Mission Hospitals in Asheville, North Carolina, and Park Ridge Medical Associates in Hendersonville, North Carolina.  She works with our geriatric patients and also performs medical consults and conducts history and physicals in all of our patient groups.
