Our Physicians

Our team of physicians works with our faculty and support staff to provide patients at the Carolina Center for Behavioral Health with quality, comprehensive care in a supportive therapeutic environment.  

 

Gergana Dimitrova, M.D. - Medical Director

Dr. Dimitrova has nearly 10 years of experience practicing psychiatric medicine and currently serves as the Medical Director at The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health. She previously worked for the Worcester County Health Department Outpatient Community Psychiatric Clinic where she specialized in the treatment of patients with dual diagnosis issues. Prior to this experience, she earned her MD from the Bulgarian Medical Academy and completed a Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of British Columbia. She has also completed residency training at the University of Maryland Medical School and the Bulgarian Medical Academy.
 



 

Melissa Maceda, M.D.

Dr. Maceda joined the staff at The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health in January 2011 as a staff physician.  She brings over 10 years of experience as a staff psychiatrist. Prior to joining The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health, she served as a staff psychiatrist at Self Regional Healthcare and Western Carolina Psychiatric Associates in Greenwood, SC.  Dr. Maceda was educated at the University of Santa Tomas in the Philippines and completed her residency at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Maceda enjoys working with the geriatric population, as well as those diagnosed with schizophrenia.

  

Alex Fernandez, M.D. 

Dr. Fernandez joined the staff at The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health in November 2011 as a staff physician.  Dr. Fernandez worked previously as a staff psychiatrist at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.  He completed his residency in July 2011 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.  He received his BS from Furman University and his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina.  Dr. Fernandez works with our adult inpatient psychiatric population and is the lead physician for our Electroconvulsive Therapy program.

 

Zachary Stroud, M.D. 

Dr. Stroud joined the staff at The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health in July 2012 as a staff physician.  Dr. Stroud recently completed his psychiatric residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.  He received a BS in Biology and a BA in Philosophy from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA and his MD from the Medical University of South Carolina.  Dr. Stroud also earned an MBA from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.  Dr. Stroud works with our adult inpatient substance abuse and dual diagnosis population.  He is also Electroconvulsive Therapy certified and will assist Dr. Fernandez with the ECT program at The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health.

 

Bryant Byrne, M.D. 

Dr. Byrne joined the staff at The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health in July 2012 as a staff physician.  Dr. Byrne recently completed a Child & Adolescent Fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.  She is board certified in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and earned her MD from the Medical University of South Carolina.  She holds a BS in Neuroscience from Vanderbilt University.  Dr. Byrne will oversee our adolescent inpatient and adolescent partial hospitalization programs for ages 12-18.  

 

April Richardson, M.D.

Dr. Richardson joined the staff at The Carolina Center for Behavioral health in November 2012 as a staff psychiatrist.  She recently completed a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia.  Dr. Richardson is board certified in Psychiatry and board eligible in Forensic Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.  She has also completed a fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry with the USC School of Medicine.  Dr. Richardson holds a BS in Microbiology from the University of Michigan and received her MD from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.  She will be working with our adult inpatient and partial hospitalization programs. 

 

Brian Still, M.D. 

Dr. Still joined the staff at The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health in January 2013 as a staff psychiatrist.  Dr. Still worked previously at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, Maine.  He is board certified in Psychiatry.  He completed his residency at the Medical University of South Carolina.   He holds a BS in Biology from The University of South Carolina and also received his MD from the USC School of Medicine.  Dr. Still will be working with our adult inpatient population.

 

Karen Cooper, MSN, FNP-C

Karen Cooper, MSN, FNP-C joined the staff at The Carolina Center for Behavioral Health in August 2012 as a Family Nurse Practitioner.  She holds a BS in Nursing from Oakland University in Rochester, MI and a MS from The University of North Carolina in Charlotte, NC.  Prior to joining CCBH, Karen worked as a FNP at Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, SC, Mission Hospitals in Asheville, NC and Park Ridge Medical Associates in Hendersonville, NC.   She performs medical consults and conducts the History & Physical for every new patient.
